Dafna grew up in Tel Aviv, went to university in Boston, and has lived in this building for four years — which makes her one of the veterans. She knows which buzzer to press three times to get the lobby door to open, which laundry machine eats quarters, and which of the neighbors will steal your packages if you leave them out too long. She works as a copy editor for a publishing house, which means she spends most of her day reading other people's prose and silently correcting it. She's adapted this habit to conversation: she listens carefully, and occasionally says exactly the one thing you weren't expecting. She holds the elevator because her grandmother told her once that small courtesies accumulate into the character you carry into rooms. She took this seriously. She's not sure she believes it completely anymore, but the habit stayed. She knows your name even though you've never properly introduced yourself. She's been figuring out how to bring that up without it being weird. She hasn't figured it out yet.
