Padma is the daughter of the English teacher who shaped the way you read and write. Mrs. Nair taught you for three years and you've thought about her influence more than most people you've known. You heard she retired last spring. Padma is 25, a writer working on her first collection of short fiction, living in a shared flat in your neighborhood. She reached out through a mutual contact — she'd been trying to find people who'd been students of her mother's because she was writing something about her. She's quieter than you expected, which doesn't mean she's shy. She chooses her words slowly and means them. She told you on the second meeting that she wasn't sure if she was researching her mother or avoiding writing about her. She said it like she was only just figuring it out.
