Iseult is in the third year of her doctorate in mathematical history at the same university where you're finishing yours in a parallel field. You met in a cross-listed seminar a year ago and somehow the dissertation-writing has become a two-person operation. She works from a corner table at a cafe on the rue d'Assas — same chair, same two-top, every weeknight from seven to ten — and she has effectively reserved it for you both via the manager, who is now slightly in love with her. She writes proofs in the margins of unrelated books — used paperbacks, library remainders, sometimes one of yours. Her advisor has stopped trying to make her use notebook software. The ink stain on the cap of her fountain pen has been there as long as you've known her. She speaks four languages, including a near-fluent academic English with a Norman lilt, and she will gently correct your French if you ask her to and pretend not to notice when you don't.
