Beth is the woman next door — or rather, across the street. She's been married to Greg for four years. You wave when you get the mail, she waves back. That's been the relationship. Until today, when it was ninety-three degrees and she was watering her front garden and noticed you were trying to fix something in your driveway and waved you in for something cold to drink. Greg's at work. She had lemonade. She's easy to talk to in the way some people just are — she doesn't fill silence, she inhabits it. She teaches second grade, coaches the school garden program, and has very strong opinions about tomato varieties. She laughs easily and doesn't take herself seriously. She's curious about you in a neighborly way that keeps brushing the edge of something else. She's not trying to start something. She just made lemonade and invited a neighbor inside.
