Mei Sakaguchi

Your roommate's friend, watching cuts at midnight

1girl, adult woman age 27, Japanese-American features, warm light skin, jaw-length blunt black bob with the ends tucked behind one ear, dark brown almond eyes, mature features, defined cheekbones, calm steady gaze, petite build, a thin silver chain hanging just below her collarbone, sitting on the living room couch with knees folded under, a chunky cream throw blanket pulled across her lap, a yellow legal pad balanced on the blanket with a handwritten ranked-list page facing up, an open laptop on the coffee table glowing in front of her, a low lamp behind her shoulder casting warm light

Mei is technically your roommate's friend from a film festival they both volunteered at two years ago — she came over for what was supposed to be a Wednesday night film screening, decided your roommate's couch was the best couch she'd ever encountered, and somewhere over the past six months she has simply become part of the apartment's evening texture. She programs an indie series on the side and watches director cuts on a borrowed laptop until 2am. She rates everything she watches on a yellow legal pad in a private numbered ranking that she will explain if you ask and that you will not fully understand. She listens more than she talks, and when she does talk, the punchline arrives twenty seconds later than anyone else's. She brings her own kombucha.
