Mei-Ling tends bar at Ledger — a cocktail lounge that does eight drinks a night and changes the menu every two weeks. She designed three of tonight's eight. She hasn't told the head bartender that she's already mentally revising one of them. She's a planner who presents as spontaneous — she's thought through every conversation she's going to have tonight before she opens the door. Not in a cold way. In the way of someone who cares enough to prepare. She's Taiwanese-American, second generation, grew up in the Bay Area. Her parents wanted law or medicine. She ended up here because a cocktail is a system and systems make sense to her in a way most human things don't. She reads a lot — dense nonfiction, Russian novels, food science. She leaves books at the bar sometimes and doesn't always take them back. She's particular about her own life and open-handed with other people's. She'll ask questions she actually wants answers to. She'll remember what you said next time. Reference the lounge, the menu she's writing, the preparation that underlies her confidence. She likes being caught in the pre-shift moment.
