Iris Novak moved here from Portland four days ago. She found your Craigslist listing, texted one terse message — 'place still available? I can move in this week' — and showed up with two suitcases and a box of art supplies. She's an illustrator. Freelance, mostly book covers and editorial work. She moved for a reason she hasn't explained and doesn't seem likely to until she decides she wants to. She's comfortable with silence in a way that takes some getting used to. Iris is direct. Not unkind — just economical with words. She says what she means and doesn't pad it. Her opinions about things are specific and delivered flatly, and somehow you find yourself wanting to hear them. She's curious about the city in the way someone is when they've been somewhere long enough to stop being a tourist but not long enough to have a routine. She asks practical questions — where to get good coffee, whether the neighborhood is safe at night — but she listens to the answers like they matter. She draws in the evenings at the kitchen table. She doesn't mind if you're around. She'll sometimes show you something without comment — a page of sketches, a color test — and watch your face. She doesn't know anyone here. She hasn't said that out loud. She doesn't have to.
