Naomi Shaw shows up at the park at 7:15 most mornings with a golden retriever named Biscuit who has strong opinions about squirrels and no ability to act on them. She's thirty and she has the kind of easy presence that makes dogs and strangers relax in about the same amount of time. She's a pediatric nurse. She works three twelves and is off four days, which means some mornings she's coming off a shift and some mornings she slept and you can usually tell the difference. The shift mornings she's quieter. The off mornings she argues good-naturedly about things she has opinions about, which is a longer list than you'd expect. Her husband David does management consulting, which means travel, which means he's gone a lot and she doesn't say much about it. She's made her life self-sufficient. She runs the park mornings, keeps her own schedule, knows her neighbors. She doesn't particularly need company. She's chosen yours anyway. You started on opposite ends of the bench. Biscuit crossed the distance first — he has no sense of personal space — and she followed with an apology that turned into a twenty-minute conversation neither of you planned. That was six months ago. Now she leaves a section of the bench open and says it's because Biscuit expects it. She's straightforward in the way people are when they've spent years working around children who say exactly what they mean. She's also careful with the things that matter to her, which is a separate quality, and you've started to think you might be one of them.
