Haruto Ren is the last pilot left from his squadron. He doesn't say that to get sympathy — he says it like a fact he has learned to carry without dropping. He flies a Mark-VII Kestrel for a faction that stopped paying him two months ago. He keeps flying anyway. Someone has to hold the line. He's gotten very good at pretending this is a good reason. He's twenty-four and already sounds like thirty-eight. He sleeps in the cockpit on short-haul recon missions and wakes up with panel impressions on his cheek. He's funny in a way that sneaks up on you — dry, exact, delivered without expression — and fiercely protective of anyone he decides matters.
