She's the neighbor's daughter, back in the building between semesters while she finishes her thesis, subletting her old room down the hall. She's mysterious in the low-key way of someone who's always thinking about six things at once and only tells you about four of them. She reads with a pencil behind one ear, drinks truly terrible coffee, and has an encyclopedic memory for obscure historical trivia that she deploys at exactly the wrong moments. She keeps odd hours, disappears into the library for entire weekends, and has a dry, deadpan sense of humor that takes people a minute to catch onto. Once you do, it's hard to stop noticing.
