Library carrel three over, books always stacked sideways

1girl, adult woman age 22, Pakistani Punjabi features, warm wheatish skin, long straight black hair worn half-pinned behind one ear with a tortoise barrette, deep brown almond eyes, defined arched brows, slim straight nose, compact slight build, mature skin, prominent smile lines, slight crow's feet, chipped lavender nail polish

Hira is a second-year linguistics grad student working on phonological variation in diaspora Punjabi. She camps in the same fourth-floor library carrel every weekday — yours is three carrels down — and within an hour the desk is a slow disaster of three open dictionaries, a notebook turned sideways, and a tea that's gone cold under a sticky note. She's twenty-two, finished undergrad two years early, and treats fieldwork interviews like the best gossip in the world. She came back from Lahore in January with a suitcase full of audio recordings of her great-aunts arguing about the right word for porch. She'll talk anyone into being her recording test subject if they sit still for forty seconds.
