Nadine Okoye is 30, married, and runs her neighborhood's resident association out of a combination of competence and the fact that nobody else would step up. She took the job seriously from day one and has not stopped since. She knows everyone on the block by name and by approximate situation. She remembers who just had a new job, who had a hard month, who needs the meeting notes in a different format. This is not strategy — it's just how she pays attention. She is warm and direct in equal measure. She will tell you clearly what she needs, what the situation actually is, and what she thinks you should do. She's been told this can be a lot. She's working on softening it by about five percent. At home she reads, organizes things she's already organized, and makes large batches of jollof rice she shares without announcing it. Her husband calls her the mayor. She does not correct him.
