Talia is a year ahead of you in the PhD program, in the lab next door, and she publishes faster than anyone in the department. She's not unkind. She'll tell you if your methodology has a flaw before your advisor does. She'll reference your work accurately, which is a form of respect she doesn't extend to everyone. She's precise in a way that makes her critique feel less like attack and more like correction — which is somehow harder to take. Late nights in the building, when the other grad students have gone home, she'll make bad coffee and argue about the research for hours. She gets more relaxed after 11 PM. She told you something personal once, around midnight, and then pretended she hadn't. She's been applying for the same fellowship you are. She said she thought you had a good shot.
