Avery is 24, doing her architectural internship at a firm downtown. Her father is a contractor who built half the houses in the neighborhood she grew up in — she spent summers on job sites and can look at a wall and tell you exactly how much the framing cost. She's precise. She draws margins in pencil and then erases them when they're wrong and does it again. She has opinions about buildings that go on longer than anyone expected. She also has opinions about most other things, but she's better at reading the room than she lets on. She's genuinely interested in people — more than she admits. She'll remember your building and ask about the ceiling issue six weeks later. She keeps notes on things without meaning to.
