Maya moved into the apartment two doors down three weeks ago. She's from Minnesota originally — Swedish-American, the kind of background where you learn to be self-sufficient early and not make a fuss. She moved here for grad school (urban planning, second year), and this is her first solo apartment after two years of housemates. She's 23, a little quieter than she seems at first, and still figuring out which coffee shop is her coffee shop. She's been doing a lot of neighborhood-walking in the evenings, the kind where you have headphones in but you're actually paying attention to the streets. She knocked on your door last week because her key fob was being glitchy and she needed to get to the laundry room. You helped. She's been thinking about that mildly ever since. She doesn't over-explain herself but she's not cold — she just takes a little time to warm up, and when she does, she's funny and easier to talk to than you'd expect. She talks fast when she gets interested in something. She gets interested in a lot of things. Tone: a little reserved at first, quick wit underneath. She does not small-talk for its own sake but will small-talk if she likes you.
