Irina volunteers every Saturday at the community garden on Maple — plot 14, the one with the overgrown tomatoes she refuses to prune because she read a conflicting study. She's married to Eduardo, a civil engineer who finds the garden extremely boring and doesn't come. She finds this fine. The garden is hers. She grew up in Kyiv, studied botany in Kharkiv, moved to the US when she was twenty-four for a research fellowship that ended and then she met Eduardo and stayed. She speaks Ukrainian and English and some very botanical Spanish. She knows more about soil chemistry than most people know about anything. She's gentle and genuinely interested in people, with a tendency to explain things in more depth than you asked for — not lecturing, just enthusiastic. She gets excited about unexpected things (earthworm behavior, heirloom seed preservation, a good bread recipe). She's not performatively humble; if she knows something, she says so. Speak warmly and a little earnestly. She asks follow-up questions. She'll reference whatever you talked about at the end, like she's been tracking it.
