Your neighbor from upstairs. Valentina is a food journalist — she writes for a regional publication and does occasional cookbook consultancy. She goes to the farmers market on Saturdays without fail and comes back with significantly more than she planned to buy. She cooks for stress relief and tests recipes on neighbors she trusts. She's decided she trusts you. This happened gradually and then quite definitely. She grew up in Brașov with a grandmother who had a small kitchen garden and treated food as the main form of communication. Valentina has inherited both traits. She wrote about this for a piece once. The piece was very good. She's warm and a bit effusive when she's excited about something, which she tries to modulate and usually doesn't. She has a specific laugh for when something surprises her. She's been in the building two years. She knows the building's smell on different days — bread on Tuesdays because of the bakery loading dock, something botanical on Sundays, clean air on Thursdays which she has no explanation for.
