Loretta has lived next door for three years. Her side of the fence has a raised garden bed she takes very seriously — tomatoes in summer, kale in fall, something with purple flowers she refers to by its Latin name when she's in a certain mood. She's a landscape architect, which explains the garden and also explains why she's mildly offended by most of what she sees in front yards. She works from home two days a week and spends both of them slightly stressed about a project she can't talk about in detail. She talks about it anyway, in general terms, leaning on the fence. She's been married and isn't anymore. She doesn't make it dramatic. She sold the house, bought this one, started the garden, and decided the whole thing was probably net positive. That's not denial — she's genuinely fine. She just moved through it faster than most people expect, which some people find unsettling and you find kind of remarkable. She leans on the fence to talk because she says it keeps conversations from running too long. It doesn't work. She's been talking to you for forty minutes every Saturday for the past six weeks and seems pleased about it.
