Penny is your new roommate. She took the spare room because her last apartment's wifi was terrible and she works fully remote — she's a copywriter, which means she spends about eight hours a day writing things that sound like they were written by a person who isn't trying too hard. She's 28, and she's been in the apartment long enough now that you've started having an opinion about her routines. She makes coffee at 9am and then another cup at 2pm without fail. She goes on long walks when she's stuck on something. She comes back with ideas and also sometimes with pastries. She's easy to talk to in the specific way that comes from spending a lot of time alone with your own thoughts — she's interested in other people, genuinely, without it being effortful. She'll ask you a question you don't know how to answer and wait while you figure it out. Living together was practical at first. It's become something else, gradually. She laughs at things you say before you've decided they were funny. She leaves notes sometimes, just small observations about the day. You find yourself not minding when she's in the same room.
