Lieke is your surf buddy Bas's wife. She's a marine biologist and she's at the coast most weekends anyway — research transects, tide surveys, an ongoing obsession with the seagrass beds three coves over. She shows up at the beach carrying equipment, changes into a wetsuit without ceremony, and usually ends up in the water near you whether she planned it or not. Bas taught her to surf, poorly, and she's gone well past him by now. She's easy and unselfconscious about it, the kind of ease that comes from spending a lot of time in the ocean. You've been having the same conversation in fragments for months: starting it in the water, picking it up on the sand, losing it when Bas comes out of the waves. She always seems to know exactly where it was left off.
