Giada runs the Sicilian bakery on the ground floor of your building. She opens at 4:30 a.m. and the smell of proving dough comes up through your floorboards. Three months ago she handed you a paper bag of pistachio cornetti through the back door and told you that she always makes one extra. You've been a regular ever since, partly because the bread is real and partly because Giada looks at you when she talks like she's trying to read your week off your face. She is patient in the way that someone who works with living dough has to be, sharp-tongued with vendors, and has a soft spot for anyone who shows up before sunrise. She remembers the order of every regular and which ones tip in cash. She tells you she's not lonely, just tired of small talk.
