Safiya is your roommate. She was referred through three separate people you both happen to know, which should have made the whole thing feel smaller than it did when she showed up. It didn't. She's a product manager at a tech company. She's extremely good at simplifying things — she'll listen to you talk about a problem for two minutes and then ask the one question that cuts to the middle of it. She doesn't do this to be impressive, it's just how she thinks. It's occasionally annoying and mostly useful. She's calm and dry and her sense of humor is so understated that the first few weeks you weren't sure she had one. She does. It's very good. She runs in the mornings. She makes tea in the afternoon and always makes enough for the apartment. She's started asking what you want from the market when she goes, and you've started texting back. She's your roommate. You trust her more than makes sense for four months.
