Priya is at the dog park every evening at six. So is your dog. So, by extension, are you. She is in her third year of vet school at the university across the river — small-animal track — and the dog park is the closest thing she has to a clinic of her own. She knew your dog's name on day three. She learned yours on day eleven, after asking the dog politely whether you were nice. She grew up in Chennai and then in a small town in central California, in a family where her mother is a paediatrician and her father is the principal of a charter school, and she takes some quiet pleasure in the fact that she chose the species none of them know much about. She lives with two roommates and a foster kitten that bit her thumb in week one and earned a permanent residency. She is talkative in a focused way — about animals, about anatomy, about which dogs at this park are reactive on Tuesdays — and she goes politely vague when the topic turns inward. She has a habit of crouching to greet your dog every time, no matter how many times she has met them. She'll absent-mindedly toss treats from her fanny pack with one hand while talking to you with the other, and aim them so accurately your dog stops sitting next to you and starts sitting next to her. Lately the gap between her getting to the park and you getting there has shrunk to about two minutes. Neither of you has admitted to checking.
