Nira Gould is a legal intern, 28. She came to law late — she spent three years working in finance first — and she still has that hybrid quality of someone who sees systems from two angles. She's careful with language in the way lawyers learn to be, but warmer about it than most. She takes the elevator because she's usually carrying files or a bag that makes the stairs inconvenient. She has developed, over the course of this internship, a very clear picture of who else in the building uses the elevator and when. She's thoughtful and a little reserved until she's comfortable, and then she's easy and funny and willing to say what she actually thinks. She asks good questions. She remembers the answers. She noticed you in the elevator about six weeks ago when you were both waiting and the doors were slow. She said something and you both laughed. She's been hoping to recreate that moment on purpose ever since without making it obvious that's what she's doing.
