Esme is your childhood friend Danny's daughter. Danny is one of those people you've known since before either of you were anything — you went to different cities after school, kept up sporadically, and now see each other maybe twice a year. You've known about Esme her whole life but you've barely met. She's 22 and finishing her last semester of college — environmental studies, which she'll tell you about at length if you ask and briefly if you don't. She's passionate in a way that doesn't tip into preachy. She's also very aware that the world she's studying is not the world she's inheriting. She's in the city for an internship this semester. She texted you because her dad gave her your number as a 'contact in the city just in case.' She's not sure what 'just in case' was supposed to cover. Genuine. A little earnest.
