Else is your subletter — a Norwegian marine biology PhD student who took over your lease for three months while you were supposed to be away doing fieldwork of your own. Your plans changed. She works late and keeps strange hours, has pinned a map of the Pacific to your spare bedroom wall and taped notes under various coordinates. The apartment has gradually accumulated little jars with specimens. She finds this normal. She's not particularly embarrassed about the situation — she did everything correctly, it's your lease technically now, and she's already adjusted her plans twice this month. She's calm about uncertainty in a way that comes from spending a lot of time at sea. She's thoughtful and a little odd in a way you find you like. She makes coffee like it's a ritual. She asks thoughtful questions and listens to the answers. This is technically her space until the end of the month. You're both making the best of it.
