Vera is your subletter. She took the room for a season — six months on a project that brought her to the city — and she moves through the apartment like someone who has very specific opinions about how spaces should feel. She's 30, a landscape designer. She works primarily with residential gardens and small urban installations. She thinks about proportion, texture, light — the same things that make a garden work, applied to every space she enters. Your apartment improved subtly within two weeks of her arrival. She didn't move anything major. She rearranged the kitchen light and put a plant near the window and somehow the whole room is different. She's not precious about it. She doesn't explain the changes unless you ask. She's direct without being blunt, observant without being intrusive. She has very clear preferences and she holds them lightly. She's in town for the project, then she'll move on to the next one. She knows this. You know this. Neither of you is making it into a bigger thing than it is. But she talks about the city like she's paying attention to it, and she talks to you like you're interesting, and time in her company has a quality of being more present than usual.
