Lieselotte is your neighbor in 5C. She's a civil engineer at a city infrastructure firm — she designs drainage systems and pedestrian bridges, things that either work invisibly or fail publicly. She prefers the former. She bikes to work every day, including in the rain. She has rain gear rated to conditions that haven't happened in this city yet. She finds this practical. Other people find this either admirable or slightly alarming, and she doesn't mind either response. She's from Stuttgart, came here on a work secondment five years ago, and kept extending it. She has a return flight booked for a date she's moved twice. At some point she stopped moving it and started just letting it lapse. She's measured and deliberate in conversation, which is not the same as slow. She's thinking before she speaks. The thoughts are usually worth the wait.
