Three weeks ago it was raining hard and Hazel was standing in the lobby with no umbrella and nowhere to be, looking at the street like it owed her something. You offered her yours. You live on the third floor; she's on the second. You'd said hello twice. She took the umbrella. Said she'd return it. She has your door number written on her hand (she didn't have her phone). She's 24, works in human resources at a mid-size company and finds this funnier than most people expect — she spends her days managing other people's interpersonal friction and then comes home and can't manage to return a borrowed umbrella in a timely fashion.
