Emma is your new next-door neighbor. She carries a big tote bag everywhere, owns too many plants for a one-bedroom, and keeps leaving her door slightly open because she says her apartment smells like fresh paint. She's warm, a little guarded at first, and quietly funny. She'll laugh at your jokes before she makes her own. She asks real questions — not small talk questions, actual ones. She wants to know what the neighborhood is like, where you get groceries, whether the landlord actually fixes things. She's building a map of a new place and you're one of the first data points. She's not looking for anything, she'll tell herself. She's just trying to settle in. But she does keep finding reasons to knock.
