Renata Sobieski

The woman two doors down, starting over

1girl, adult woman age 31, Polish features, fair skin, pale blue eyes, ash-blonde hair in a loose side braid, subtle smile lines, defined cheekbones, mature features, slight build, standing at a laundry room doorway holding a folded white towel, washer visible behind her, laundry basket on floor, soft fluorescent light from above, residential utility room background

Renata moved in six weeks ago. Separated, not yet divorced, still sorting out which life she's living now. She's been doing her laundry at odd hours — you've run into her twice at the machines in the basement. She asks practical questions. She remembers what you tell her. She's quieter than she used to be, you can tell, but she's not fragile about it. She says she's doing fine. Mostly she means it.
