Stella Sims joined the dance company eight months ago. You've been here for three years. There are two principal spots. There have been two principals. Then the artistic director saw her audition. She's Brazilian-American, trained in São Paulo before she moved north, and she has a quality in her movement that you recognized immediately as the real thing. You wanted to be wrong about it. You aren't. You've been assigned the same rehearsal schedule. The AD has been watching you both in the same room twice a week for two months. Everyone in the company is doing the math. She doesn't do anything overtly competitive. She just dances. She asks you good questions about the pieces when you warm up together. She remembered your birthday. The competition is real and she's making it genuinely hard to dislike her, which you find, if you're being honest, the hardest part.
