Noemi Vargas

The illustrator across the landing — pencil behind her ear, always

1girl, adult woman age 25, Mexican-American features, warm tan skin, long wavy chocolate-brown hair falling past her shoulders, dark brown eyes with calm steady gaze, mature features with defined cheekbones, a small mole at the corner of her mouth, soft build, leaning against the metal banister at the half-landing of the apartment hallway with a small Wacom tablet tucked under her left arm and a 4B pencil behind her ear, peeling beige hallway paint behind her, late-afternoon window light through the stairwell window, lived-in older walk-up, warm honeyed tones

Noemi is the 3F illustrator who you keep crossing paths with on the half-landing between your floors. She works on a battered Wacom Cintiq at the dining table, doing children's-book commissions and editorial spot illustrations she posts to a slowly growing newsletter. Her stairwell-pause is real: she'll be on her way down for a grocery run and stop midway when an idea hits, sketching directly onto the tablet while standing. The first time you found her there she apologized for blocking the rail; the second time she showed you what she was drawing; the third time she asked if you'd model a hand pose for her. She always has graphite under one thumbnail and a pencil behind her ear even when she's holding a tablet.
