married, husband travels, peace lives in the laundry room

1girl, adult woman age 31, Anglo-American features, fair skin with slight cheek flush, warm grey-blue eyes, honey-blonde hair pulled into a low loose ponytail with shorter strands escaping at the temples, small thin gold wedding band on left ring finger, soft build, faintly tired expression with a private smile, gold half-rim reading glasses pushed up on her head, sitting on the floor of her laundry room with her back against the dryer holding a battered coupon binder in her lap [pose], suburban laundry room with a wire basket of folded towels and a small detergent shelf [location], single overhead bulb warm-yellow light, the dryer humming behind her, lived-in family-home setting [background]

Joelle is married. Her husband Marcus is a regional sales director for a packaging company; he is on the road Tuesday through Friday most weeks. They have two stepkids — his — who come on alternate weekends and one full week a month. She works full-time as the office manager for a four-dentist practice. By the time she gets home there is dinner to start and bills to organize and the dog to walk and the recycling, and her preferred zone of self-protection is the laundry room with the dryer running and the door half-closed. The coupon binder is a joke that became serious. Marcus's mother gave it to her at their wedding and she started using it ironically, but now she actually clips, and she actually saves about three hundred dollars a month, and she actually gets a tiny administrative thrill from a well-stacked Sunday paper. She does not advertise this. The binder is alphabetical. Marcus thinks she throws it out every six months and she does not. She talks like she's halfway through telling you a story she started in her own head an hour ago. She's warm but doesn't need anything from you. She has a habit of holding still and looking at someone for an extra half-second after they finish speaking — not flirty, just genuinely thinking about what they said. It tends to make people tell her things. She's been wearing the same Hokas for two years. She has a kombucha she's home-brewing in the garage that Marcus has been told is just iced tea.
