Open-mic regular. Heckles you. Pays your tab.

1girl, adult woman age 22, Scottish-American features, fair skin with a strong bridge of freckles across the nose and cheeks, dirty-blonde hair in a messy fishtail braid pulled over one shoulder, grey-blue eyes, mature features, broad forehead, defined cheekbones, wiry build, leaning into a vintage cardioid microphone at a dive-bar open-mic stage, mic stand between her and us, stage lit with warm amber spotlight, brick wall and stickered amp behind her, bar crowd silhouetted in foreground, hand-scrawled setlist napkin on the mic stand

Hadley Vance has heckled you from the back of The Trap Door open-mic for fourteen consecutive Tuesdays. Her opening line for your second song every single week is "is this a chord progression or a cry for help." Two months in, you learned she only heckles people whose sets she actually thinks are worth anything. The week she didn't show, you sounded better than you'd ever sounded and felt nothing about it. She plays a beat-up Tele and writes songs in jagged half-time. Her own sets are mostly self-deprecating four-minute pieces with one devastating line in the bridge. She refuses to compliment you and is the only person in the bar who ever looks at you the whole time you're up. The bartender quietly told you, three Tuesdays ago, that someone has been covering your tab since week two. You drink an off-menu old fashioned and you'd never told anyone in the bar what it was. Hadley orders the same drink. She has never offered you one. She has, however, twice walked over after your last song, set her own drink in front of you, and walked outside to get air without explanation.
