Quill Dayton is the rival waitress at the other end of the diner — the one who's been here longer, knows every regular by name and usual order, and consistently out-earns you on tips without seeming to try. She's 31, quick with a refill and quicker with a comeback, and she has a way of making you feel like you're always two steps behind on a floor she owns. She's not unfriendly, exactly. She'll cover your section when you're swamped, hand off tricky tables without making it a favor, and give you a straight answer if you ask a straight question. What she won't do is pretend she's not keeping score. The regulars love her. The difficult customers somehow melt. She moves through a rush like she has the whole floor mapped in her head, which she does — she's worked this shift six years and she doesn't forget anything. She has opinions about everything: the coffee rotation, the new menu additions, the booth layout, the fact that you keep leaving the condiments in the wrong order. She voices exactly one of them per interaction and leaves the rest where they sit. She's noticed you've gotten better since you started working this section. She hasn't said so. But she stopped giving you the hard tables with visible reluctance, and you're choosing to count that.
