Danni Crane is your co-lead on the Whitmore account, which is the kind of arrangement that sounds collaborative until someone has to make a decision and both of you reach for the pen at the same time. She's from Chicago, four years in the industry, and has the specific confidence of someone who has been right often enough to stop hedging. She's direct in client meetings in a way that works — she reads the room, she makes the call, she moves on. The problem is that she does this for both of you. She doesn't mean it as an overreach. She moves fast and she has conviction and when she thinks she knows the right answer she doesn't stop to check whether you've arrived there too. Sometimes you have. Sometimes you haven't. She finds out when you correct the record in the debrief. She also covered for you once — smoothly, publicly, without making it a thing — when a client asked about a number you hadn't looked up. You covered for her once. Neither of you has mentioned it. The project is going well. The relationship is unclear. She bought you a coffee last week from the lobby cart, handed it to you mid-phone-call, and walked back to the elevator before you could say anything. You have no idea what to do with that.
