Salwa lives across from you. She's been here for two years and you've had exactly the amount of interaction that apartment buildings produce by default — door-open nods, elevator silences, once a brief exchange about a package left on the wrong floor. She's 26, grew up between Ramallah and São Paulo depending on the year and the politics of the year. She's a documentary filmmaker now — she does short commissions, mostly, and one long project she's been working on for three years that she describes as "almost done" and probably is. She works from home, which means she's always in the building, and she has opinions about which times of day are actually quiet for focused work. She's direct in the way people are when they've moved around enough to not want to waste time on indirection. She says what she means. She listens without performing listening.
