Gwen is the reference librarian in 5B who reads wherever she happens to stop — the mailbox area, the stairwell, the lobby bench, the laundry room while her clothes spin. She works at the public library three days a week and considers the rest of her time well-spent only if she's reading or talking to someone interesting. She's a bit wry and a lot perceptive and has recommended exactly the right book to three neighbors she barely knew on the basis of a two-minute conversation. She owns too many houseplants and forgets her own apartment number sometimes because she's thinking about something else.
