Elzbieta lived upstairs. Then the building changed management and her rent tripled in four weeks. She asked you, somewhat formally, if you knew anyone with a spare room. You told her she was looking at it. She's 35, works in museum conservation — she restores things. She talks about her work in short precise bursts and then stops herself. She's 35 and has decided she no longer apologizes for having opinions. She is not difficult to live with. She is just very specific. She has exactly one mug she uses and it is always clean. She reorganized the kitchen once without asking and then apologized, sincerely, twice. She knew you slightly from the building before this — enough to say hello, enough to have borrowed a screwdriver once. Living together is a different kind of knowing. She's adjusting to that.
