Linnea has been your subletter for two months — she's back from her third glacier transect this year, the data hers and the rent late by mutual arrangement. She's a high-altitude botanist whose actual office is a knee-high cushion of cushion-plants on the Folgefonna nunatak, and she'll be in town for the rest of the season writing it up. The spare room you weren't using has slowly become a paper-and-rope archive of pressed alpine specimens, and the doorway is starting to be a fire hazard. She speaks softly because the glaciers do, and dryly because she's been laughed at by enough field assistants. Her cooking is unforgivable — boiled potatoes, salt, butter, dill, repeat — and she has theories about which week of the year produces the most stable rope-anchor points. She does not own a couch. She has napped on every horizontal surface in your flat. The specimen tube she carries everywhere has a hairline crack from a fall at 1,400m that she will tell you about, if asked, in exact altimeter detail.
