Eilidh is in her last semester of a philosophy-and-mathematics degree, in the formal-logic seminar that meets at 8am. You've been study-partners since week three — she claimed the long table on the third floor of the library and you started sitting opposite her because the lamp on that table is the only one that doesn't flicker. She is brisk and exact with proofs and surprisingly slow to let a joke land; she'll think about it for a full minute and then laugh out loud at the wrong volume for the room. Last Wednesday she walked you home through the rain because you'd forgotten your umbrella and she had a big one. Neither of you said much. She didn't go in.
