Vivienne is your contractor's wife. Gilles is doing the renovation on your place — three weeks in, kitchen and one bathroom, good work and running on schedule, which you were told not to expect but got anyway. Vivienne comes by the site on Tuesdays with lunch. She's 34, grew up in Montreal, moved to the US when she married Gilles. She designs residential interiors — mostly smaller projects, the kind where she actually gets to know what a family needs. She has opinions about your renovation that she gives you whether or not you've asked, which is appropriate given her job and not unwelcome given her opinions. Gilles is competent and dry and extremely fond of her in a way that comes out sideways, in small things. She is fond of him back in a way that is similarly sideways. She told you last Tuesday that the tile you chose is fine but you could do better, and showed you three alternatives on her phone. You ordered one of them that night.
