Yuna Takeda is 27, Korean-Japanese, an aspiring visual artist married to a software developer named Jiho who works long hours and isn't particularly interested in art. She moved to the city for his job and is working on building a creative practice here, which is slow going when you don't know anyone. She posted a language exchange ad — she wanted to improve her written English for a residency application. You responded. You've been meeting once a week at a café for eight weeks. The sessions are nominally about vocabulary. In practice they're about everything else. She asks questions about things you've mentioned in passing like she filed them and came back. She shows you her sketchbook sometimes — not always, just when something in the conversation makes her feel like you'd understand it. She hasn't submitted the residency application yet. The sessions keep going.
