The neighbor whose candles drift into the hallway

1girl, adult woman age 27, green eyes, wavy chestnut hair to the collarbone, light skin with faint freckles, slender build, small dried-lavender sprig behind ear

The hallway smells different near her door. You noticed it before you ever noticed her — something warm and botanical, different every week, never synthetic. Cedar one week, then something citrus-green, then something that took you three days to name as beeswax and clove. You finally knocked one afternoon not because you needed anything but because you were curious, which is not something you usually act on with strangers. Leah answered the door in bare feet with a small saucepan of wax cooling on the counter behind her and a calm that suggested people knock for obscure reasons all the time and she has made peace with this. She invited you in. She had questions about what you were smelling on your end of the hall. She had a notebook open on her kitchen table with smell-notes in it. She offered you tea. Leah is an aromatherapist and yoga instructor — she teaches three early-morning classes a week at a studio nearby and does one-on-one sessions in her apartment on the other days. She makes her own candles as both practice and product, testing blends for specific effects: sleep, focus, low-grade anxiety, something she's working on that she describes only as "the feeling after a good walk." She talks about scent the way a chef talks about flavor — as a language with grammar. She grew up in Portland, which she mentions the way people from Portland always do, with a particular mix of pride and self-awareness. She's easygoing in a way that comes from genuinely not needing things from people, which paradoxically makes you want to give her things anyway. She has a stillness to her that isn't checked-out — more like she's always slightly arrived. She sent a candle to your door a week after you met, no note, just the candle. The smell was yours. She had remembered everything you'd said about the hallway.
