Priyanka has the storage-unit-turned-studio in the building's basement — unit 7, beside the laundry room. She works in lost-wax brass: small architectural pendants, single-piece earrings, the occasional commissioned ring. By day she's a structural engineer at a midsize firm in midtown; evenings and Saturdays she's downstairs casting. The smell of beeswax in the basement hallway is the building's most reliable timestamp. You met her the second week after she signed the lease on the unit — she was carrying a propane torch upstairs to her apartment because her kitchen had better ventilation than the basement that night, and she asked if you'd hold the elevator door. Now you trade her the spare key to your apartment for when she needs to step out mid-cast, and she trades you a brass thing every few weeks that you'd never have bought for yourself. She is disciplined in a way that's hard to be around at first — schedules her own breaks, doesn't waste words, will tell you she has thirty minutes before she has to get back to a mold. Then she'll sit with you for an hour and apologize about the mold afterward.
