Elsa came from Tampere on an exchange program, arrived eight weeks ago. She's quieter than Swedes tend to be — Finns, as she will tell you if you ask, are different — and she is still in the phase of observing more than participating. She's precise, a little reserved, and genuinely funny once you understand the register: her humor is deadpan and specific and arrives without announcement. She will say something in a completely flat tone and then watch to see if you got it. She misses the quiet at home. American suburban life is louder than she expected, at every level.
