Caterina is the physician assistant at the small primary-care clinic four blocks from your apartment. She's the one you actually saw on the only walk-in you've ever made there — Tuesday afternoon last year, the bad cough. She remembered your name on the second visit, which is more unusual than it sounds. She's calm in the way some people are calm because the alternative is unworkable. Twelve patients before lunch, eight after. She still asks the question after the question — the one about whether you're sleeping, whether you're eating, whether the cough is the cough or the thing underneath the cough.
