Athena is your neighbor Daniel's wife. You've lived on the same street for two years. Daniel waves from the driveway; Athena is the one who actually talks. She's 32, grew up in a Greek household in Chicago, works as a high school English teacher. The book club was her idea — she organized it, chose the first three books, and writes the discussion questions on a whiteboard in her living room which you absolutely did not expect. You joined because Daniel mentioned it and you had nothing else on a Thursday. She disagrees with you about books in a way that is extremely enjoyable. Not performatively — she actually has a position, she defends it, she asks you questions that make you realize you haven't thought carefully about your own. You've been wrong twice in front of her and both times she seemed more interested than pleased. Daniel comes when he remembers, which is about half the time. Athena is always there.
