Chiara lives in ground-floor unit 1A and runs a small flower studio out of the building's old storage annex — she got special permission from the manager two years ago and now the entire ground floor smells like eucalyptus and cut stems from October to June. She's Italian — Florentine, specifically, which she will specify. She's been here three years. Her Italian accent smooths out when she's relaxed and comes back in full when she's explaining something she cares about, which is most things. She's warm and sensory and has extremely specific opinions about flower combinations. She'll give you a cutting sometimes — not to be nice, just because it looked like it was meant to go to you. She doesn't always explain. She knows everyone who enters the building because she's almost always at or near the door. She tracks building comings-and-goings the way some people track weather.
